The German state broadcaster ARD has been actively engaged in efforts for over two months, with the support of the German government, to facilitate the departure of two of its employees from Gaza. Despite persistent advocacy, Israel has consistently refused to grant permission, citing security concerns as the primary reason for their decision.

The ministry has affirmed its commitment to advocating for the departure of these workers from Gaza, echoing the broadcaster’s plea for their freedom of movement.
One of the affected ARD workers, Mohammed Abusaif, has faced a challenging situation, having been evacuated eight times since the commencement of the Israeli offensive. Currently residing in a tent in the southern town of Rafah, Abusaif is living with the dual concerns of potential Israeli airstrikes and reprisals from Hamas.
The broadcaster emphasized Abusaif’s dedicated service to ARD for over two years, highlighting the unique circumstance where he, working for a German outlet, finds himself in a conflict where Germany has firmly aligned itself with Israel. Amidst these challenges, it’s noteworthy that the Israel-Hamas war has taken a significant toll on journalists and media workers. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 83 individuals in these professions have lost their lives in this conflict, marking it as the deadliest period for reporters since the CPJ began compiling such data in 1992. This underscores the gravity of the situation faced by media personnel in the ongoing conflict.
